Tanybwlch, on the Ffestiniog Railway, has long been a favoured spot for us whilst on holiday; decent walks in the woods, plenty of trains, and a cafe that does a good brew and cake/ice cream, depending on the time of year we visit. So, tonight on the blog, we have a selection of shots taken by Amy towards the end of the summer hols...
To start with, Alco "Mountaineer" at Porthmadog Harbour on the Sunday of the Bank Holiday weekend. This loco has been out of service for quite some time, but as part of the efforts to fund-raise for its restoration, a team from the railway had towed it by hand over the Cob embankment. We'd missed that, having got up a tad late, but the loco was on prominent display when we popped to the station for lunch and a visit to the shop.
Porthmadog Harbour is a lovely station, but a little tricky to photograph with the sun being on the wrong side of the line for a lot of the day. Still, Amy's new SLR copes pretty well with it.
The Bank Holiday Monday saw us meeting up with some of the extended family for a walk around the woods at Tanybwlch.
A busy scene on our arrival at Tanybwlch station.
"Palmerston" and "Welsh Pony" take on water...
...whilst the Double Fairlie got ready to leave.
A pleasant stroll in the woods followed; we did try for some more train pics in the woods, but not only did the cameras struggle a bit with the lighting and a moving target, but there weren't many trains during the mid-afternoon due to the timetable in use on the day.
Still, it was a nice, gentle stroll...
...followed by ice cream at the station, where a Double Fairlie-hauled service had arrived.
The cafe always provides a nice vantage point to watch the trains run-round.
Amy's shot of the ALCO featured in The Railway Magazine (October issue) too. Hopefully we'll be getting back up there towards the end of October itself for some rather more autumnal shots in the woods...
