A bit of railway photography from early on in the summer, whilst we were on a trip to Wales.
We'd started the day up at Caernarfon, mainly for a visit to the castle, but as even a cursory glance at this blog will make clear, we can't pass up a chance for some train pictures.
The Garratt was basking in the sun at the quayside station.
An hour later, and the other end of the line, the weather was quite the contrast.
"Welsh Pony" makes a storming departure from Porthmadog Harbour, whilst "Britomart" was trundling up and down the loop. The sky was incredibly threatening, with the odd rumble of thunder.
By the time "Britomart" was shunting the goods wagons, the thunder was becoming near continuous, and indeed there was a lightning strike in the bay, and a blast of thunder which shook the windows.
Perhaps foolishly, me and Elder Child stayed out on the platform to snap some more pictures.
We bailed out not long after, as the thunder was becoming just a little intimidating, and we knew an absolute belter of a downpour could start any moment (and indeed it did, lasting for some 12 hours and flooding out the nearby town of Criccieth).
Still, it was worth it, as I got a shot published in Narrow Gauge World; this isn't one of my regular publications, and oddly enough the other shot of mine they've published this year was also a Quarry Hunslet tank loco...
