We paid our annual pilgrammage to Poppleton Community Railway Nursery (on the outskirts of York) back in September, during the Heritage Open Day.
It kills several birds with one stone; there's usually some railway interest for me (Ben), we can aquire more plants as subject matter for Amy's plant-based photo projects, and it's generally a nice spot to spend a couple of hours (with cake and a brew from the little vol-run cafe).
Every garden centre (indeed, every garden) should have a working narrow gauge railway.
Shame there wasn't much running on the adjacent mainline.
The Lister Autotruck "Loweco" was operating a short demonstration freight train whilst we were there; when we started visiting the site some years ago it would make circuits of the site, but I gather that because of how busy the place is on an open day, they don't really go in for that now as the clearances between some of the buildings are tight when there are visitors around.
Though Autumn was very much in the air, there were still many flowers in bloom, and wildlife to be seen around the place and the wider village.
Usually my shots from Poppleton don't end up in print, but for some reason this year they caught the eyes of the editors of Todays Railways...
...and Trackside Magazine.
